The Association between Autonomic Function and Depression in Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness that requires management to prevent long-term complications. Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication that independently associated with depression in people with type 2 diabetes and the depression make type 2 diabetic people get poor
medical adherence. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between autonomic function and depression in type 2 diabetes without diabetic neuropathy for early detecting complication.

Methods: Thirty one subjects without diabetic neuropathy are examined sympathetic skin response,Short Form 36 health survey (SF-36) and Beck depression inventory (BDI).

Results: The latency and amplitude of sympathetic skin response was 1.53¡¾0.27 ms and 471.51¡¾404.226 ¥ìV. The score of SF-36 PCS, SF-36 MCS and BDI was 71.41¡¾16.01, 70.01¡¾19.42,and 11.06¡¾8.21.

Conclusion: In bivariate correlation analysis, there is no significant correlation between autonomic function and depression in type 2 diabetes without diabetic neuropathy.
